Dreams Do Come True….
With the help and cooperation of many special people. On April 10, 2008, the Mays Home Care Pediatric Division set out for Okmulgee Oklahoma to visit with one of our patients Aurora Sheppard aka “Cherokee”. Aurora is a 14-year-old girl w/a diagnosis of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and recently hospitalized w/Osteomylitis. Aurora and her family have traveled a long and bumpy road battling this debilitating disease. Mays jumped at the opportunity to spread a little “western” cheer by giving Aurora her dream. Aurora stated she really loves horses and has always wanted the chance to ride a horse and become a real “Cowgirl”! Then Mays very own “Cowboy” Mr. Wade Snow set out to accomplish this very important mission. Wade contacted a friend by the name of Roger Barnes. Roger lives in Powderly, Texas and has a Belgium horse named “Cleet” who pulls a wagon. Roger, together with Paulette Clark loaded up "Cleet" and the 4-row wagon and gladly volunteered time and effort to give Aurora her cowgirl dream. Sherri Hill (another Mays employee) also played an instrumental part in the coordination of this event. Sherri arranged for donations from several giving and warm hearted folks. Aurora and her family were extremely surprised by all the western attire (including cowgirl hat) for the “Cowgirl Round Up”. Aurora and her family were “pranced” around their neighborhood by the horse drawn wagon until her hearts content. Everyone then feasted on BBQ ribs and swapped stories of “Cowboy” heritage and praise. The commotion in the neighborhood festivities brought out a surprise guest, Mr. Mike Newell with “The Correlation of Christian Cowboys”. Those rough ole cowboys and cowgirls hearts melted and a few tears were shed when we all heard Aurora say, “This was the best day ever”!! Mays would like to extend a very heartfelt and special thanks to EVERYONE involved and all the “Cowgirl Dreams” donations that were received: Julie Graham – Handicapped ramp installation Handy Dan’s Carpentry – Okmulgee, OK Michael Christian – for his friendly smile and warm words.
